Welcome!
Neurosurgery Training Camp in Uganda, Africa Week of January 6, 2013. Join the team Day by Day...
"Our vision for Uganda is to change how they’re practicing medicine and performing surgery, and our experiences so far have been extremely humbling,” says Michael Haglund, MD, PhD of Duke University. “After our team installed about 1,400 pieces of medical equipment at Mulago Hospital, the assistant director of the hospital approached me and said, ‘We’re not in the Third World anymore—we’re in the First World.'"
A team of 18-25 surgeons, nurses, anesthesiologists and other medical staff from Duke University, visit Uganda annually to do marathon surgeries. In one day, they do more surgeries than Mulago neurosurgeons typically do in one week. Additionally, the team trains their hosts in surgical procedures and techniques and donate surgical supplies. So far, equipment and time donated to the hospital has helped increase the number of brain and spine surgeries done in Mulago by 167%. For Michael Haglund, MD, PhD, neurosurgeon at Duke Universtiy and co-director of the Uganda East African Neurosurgery Training program, faith inspired his participation in medical mission trips, including several excursions to Ecuador and Rwanda before setting out on a mission for neurosurgery in Uganda.
Haglund's team is gearing up for their next trip to Mulago Hospital in Uganda, Africa. You can come along. It is my hope to share with you the need that is still present in the primary referral hospital of Uganda and to introduce the Ugandan providers as well as the culture and lives of those that are being touched by the team's effort.
Please join us by visiting the site daily as efforts and experiences are shared through daily photoghraphy and videography. I will also blog about the trip as it unfolds with more intimate focus on the patients, needs, community and interactions with the local and Duke teams. Not only will you see the training classes and surgery miracles, you will encounter the families involved, the community. Haglund and his team continue such efforts to sustain neurosurgery in Mulago Hospital because of this tremendous community connection.
Enjoy the site....Tafadhali kufurahia tovuti!
Please know that this website's intent, is to share with you the true side of what is taking place in Mulago Hospital, while that will include many uplifting stories and amazing people of Kampala and Mulago, it will also depict the sad and sometimes disappointing and lacking aspects, in an attempt to understand and assist the local medical providers as well as raise awareness and assistance for the team (both Duke and Mulago) to continue the work in such a deserving place.
